At our September 12th meeting, we heard from Terri Alexon from the Securities Division at the Arizona Corporation Commission. Terri discussed investment fraud, common scenarios to avoid, and the importance of performing due diligence. Terri urged us to contact the commission if we suspect something suspicious, as they have the authority to close accounts and freeze assets.

On September 19th, fellow Scottsdale Sunrise Rotarian Alan Bakst and guest Andy Hesselmann shared words of inspiration and hope as they discussed their respective battles and triumphs over cancer. They were joined by Jim Brewer, Executive Director of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The goal of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since 1949, the organization has invested approximately $1.3 billion in groundbreaking research, pioneering many of today’s most innovative treatments. We also found out that Alan has been selected by the LLS as the Honored Hero of its 2019 Light the Night Walk, which will be held at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on November 16, 2019. You can help support Alan by donating to his LLS fundraising team “BACK(ST) in ACTION!”. Money raised through Light The Night events around the country allows the LLS to fund treatments for patients who are suffering from all forms of blood cancers. Congratulations Alan! Scottsdale Sunrise is proud of our Hero and grateful to see you Backst in action!!!

This week, the club will hear about The Rotary Foundation (TRF) from Rotarian Jim Bissonett). On October 3rd, we are excited to be joined by Congressman David Schweikert. If possible, please try to make it to our meeting that week so we can provide Congressman Scheikert with a respectable audience. This would also be a great meeting to bring any acquaintances that may be interested in joining our club!

Congratulations to Dale Schafer and Lauren Katz who were both inducted at our meeting on September 19th! We look forward to their fellowship and getting know them better as we work together to further the goals of Rotary.

Finally, don’t forget to join us this Saturday at 9:00am at the Miracle League of Arizona as the Rotary Rascals once again go for glory. The team could use your support even if you are not playing. The Miracle League had to reshuffle the schedule, so please note the new start time (9:00am). After we win our first game, we will play again at 10:00am – and potentially 5:00pm and 7:30pm if the win streak continues.

Have a great week!

Keith
